BRAIN DOCTORS

Brazil doctors poised for more uterus transplants

Doctors in Brazil who brought about the first-ever birth with a uterus transplant from a dead donor say they have two more women waiting to undergo the same procedure.
"All the patients that were part of this initial group have already been selected. They have already undergone in-vitro fertilization," one of the physicians, Dani Ejzenberg, told AFP on Thursday.
"There are good quality embryos in storage, and now we are awaiting compatible donors so that the transplant can be done."
All three women would be part of the "proof-of-concept" experimental phase of the procedure. For it to be then offered more broadly to women as a medical option it would need approval from Brazilian health authorities.
Very happy child
Ejzenberg, a gynecologist at the University of Sao Paulo's teaching hospital, was part of the team that this week revealed the success of their experimental operation carried out in September 2016.
That operation involved a uterus from a 45-year-old woman who died of a stroke being transplanted into the body of a 32-year-old recipient who was unable to conceive. The recipient was born without a uterus because of a rare syndrome, according to their account published in The Lancet medical journal.
Fertilized eggs were implanted in the uterus seven months later, after a cycle of drugs to suppress organ rejection.
On December 15, 2017, the baby girl was born.

"She is a very happy child and the mother too feels very fulfilled with this breakthrough," Ejzenberg said.
"On December 15 the baby will turn one year old," he said, adding that she was showing "completely normal development from both motor and neurological points of view."
Professor Luiz Carneiro, who headed the transplant team, explained that he and his colleagues were proud of the fact that they coaxed life out of their groundbreaking procedure.
"We as transplanters are used to transplant organs, and in that sense we saw that it was an opportunity for a very different focus in that we were generating life from this," he said.
The transplanted uterus in the woman was removed during the C-section birth, allowing her to stop taking immunosuppressive drugs.
Lack of live donors
Before the Brazilian experiment, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother.
The first successful childbirth following uterine transplant from a living donor took place in September 2013 in Sweden, and there have been 11 others since then.
But there are far more women in need of transplants than there are potential live donors, so medical teams in different countries have been working to see the viability of using uteruses from deceased donors.
Ten unsuccessful attempts had been made -- in the United States, the Czech Republic, and Turkey -- before the breakthrough first live birth in Brazil.

How Do I Fulfill My Dream?

Image result for picture of someone who fulfil his dream
1.Select a dream to fulfill. Some of us have so many dreams swirling in our minds, we don’t know where to start… while others of us are unable to put our finger on even one. Whether the decision be to write a book, run a marathon, buy a home, or find true love, fulfillment always starts with the intentional identification of one single goal and the heartfelt conviction to accomplish it. Take some time. Pick one. And then, set out to accomplish it.
2. Believe it is achievable. Unfortunately, too many people will never accomplish their dreams because they simply refuse to believe in themselves. Optimism is absolutely required for dream fulfillment and life enjoyment. If you don’t have natural self-confidence, make finding it your first dream to accomplish. I suggest, “How to Believe in Yourself: A Four Step Plan.” If you do have self-confidence, begin to specifically direct it towards your chosen goal.
3. Ask for help. People have gone before you. Learn as much as you can from them. When I decided to run a marathon, I read How to Run Your First Marathon and talked to my co-worker Carole almost every single week. When I decided to write an ebook, I talked to Jeramiah (technology), Martha (editing), and Jana (title/outline). Each had information that I needed and played a significant role in helping me accomplish my dreams. Don’t let your pride be the one obstacle that keeps you from them. Instead, humble yourself and ask for help.
4. Adjust your life as necessary. By definition, if you have not accomplished your dream yet, you’ll need to adjust your lifestyle to accomplish it. And while some of the adjustments may be major, they always start small:
  • Running a marathon starts with running one mile.
  • Writing a book starts with deciding on a subject.
  • Clearing your home of clutter starts with cleaning one drawer, closet, or room.
  • Losing 50 pounds starts with changing one meal.
  • Buying a home starts with saving one dollar.
Fulfilling your dreams will require you to change your lifestyle – one small step at a time. And while there may be a large number of steps to take, the good news is that the first one is completely achievable… and so is the second…
5. Set a deadline. Deadlines force our hand and call us to action. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to pick a realistic timeline and get moving. Buy a home in the next 3 years. Fix your marriage in the next year. Lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months. Or start a blog in the next 30 days. Find a calendar, a red marker, and a day. Go ahead, circle it. After all, a dream without a deadline is just a wish.
6. Tell others. I have found limitless encouragement by sharing my dreams with others. The number of people cheering for me automatically doubles. Soon, it triples. Suddenly, I’m not just trying to let myself down, but I’m trying to not let my friends down as well. And the cost of failure has just increased.
7. Stay focused. By nature, dreams will require perseverance. There will be successes and failures along the way. Those who persevere through the failures will accomplish their dreams. Those who give up will return to step #1. And if you’ve gotten this far, why would you want to start over? Instead of allowing failures to kill your dreams, use them to refocus you and your resolve.
On a side note, I realize all too well that the circumstances of life ebb and flow. I humbly recognize that the positive circumstances of my life this past year have allowed these dreams to be accomplished. One major illness, accident, or misstep could have derailed any of them listed above. If you currently find the circumstances of life derailing you from reaching your dreams, let me encourage you. Don’t lose hope. Just redirect your dreams.

I have a postcard taped to my wall. It says, “The secret to making your dreams come true is to wake up.” Well, how? Leading off with selecting a dream (step 1), each of these tips is a pull out of sleep. Personally, I’ve struggled with asking for help (step 3) and starting small (step 4). I find it both hard, and essential, to remember that people do like to help, and that most thousand-mile walks had a humble first hour.

JAMB FLASHLEARNERS

If you are in as situation where you still have a whole lot to cover and Jamb examination is less than one month, this article is for you. Stop whatever you are doing and read this life changing article on two weeks Jamb solution to the end.
Now, you may be wondering, is it possible to still prepare and pass very well when Jamb is already around the corner? It is very possible. As a matter of fact, so many persons have done it in the past.

What matters in any examination is how you prepare when the exam is very close. It is better to start serious reading two weeks to the exam than to stop reading a week to the exam.
This brings us back to the title, “How To Prepare And Pass Jamb In Two Weeks”. Take a glass of water and let me teach you how to engage in emergency preparations for Jamb.

Steps To Prepare And Pass Jamb In Two Weeks

Do you really want to prepare and pass Jamb in two weeks, the following tips will help you achieve that:
  1. Study with full insight.
  2. Make Use Of Adrenaline.
  3. Don’t Read Big Materials.
  4. Read And Revise.
  5. Use Past Questions
I will now break down the points so that you will get the full understand of the message I am trying to pass across. Trust me, it is going to be very easy for you to understand and apply.  All the points are important, however, number five is the real gist. Do not forget the number five on my list.

(1) Study With Full Insight

Since Jamb is now very close, you do not need to pay attention to every detail.
As you read, pick out the important points and neglect the rest. This will improve the rate at which you cover topics.
Stories in the textbook are to make you feel more comfortable and as well make the text interesting. They do not come out in the exam.
Now you may be asking, what about the recommended novel for Jamb use of English? It is true that the novel contains stories. Do not waste your time reading the Jamb novel. Focus on other subjects and topics.
However, pay more attention to the dates, characters and location in the novel. Questions there will come in the form of where, what, when and how.
During these few days to the exam, do not assume that you know any topic. Ensure that you visit every topic as fast as possible.
Do not waste time on any topic. Jot down the key points very fast and go back to them later for better understanding.
See Also: How to answer Jamb questions with the speed of light.

(2) Make Use Of Adrenaline

As Jamb examination date draws closer, your zeal to read reduces. When it is now finally two weeks to the exam, your zeal to read increases.
Do not waste this sudden increase appetite to read on social media. Go to your closet and read like never before. It is time to spend a high quality time with your books.
If I may ask, when last did you spend 15 hours straight with your books?
Two weeks to the exam, the power to remember everything you read in the exam hall builds up. You will not forget anything you study easily in this period. Take advantage of this to study as many topics as possible.
Many Jambites are fond of reading and chatting simultaneous. This is not good for you, especially when you have a whole lot to cover within the limited time. Don’t Facebook but Face Your Book.
Have confidence in yourself. There is no way you will fail Jamb. Forget what you hear about Jamb. If I could pass Jamb and gain admission into my school of choice, what makes you think that you cannot do the same?

(3) Don’t Read Big Materials

The books recommended by Jamb are usually very bulky. You don’t have to study them when the examination is already knocking at your door.
Get textbooks that are straight to the point. There are books you can finish within two days. This doesn’t mean that they are of lower quality. The only thing is that they contain only the relevant points.
Example of such textbook is QUICK REVIEW IN CHEMISTRY. You can actually finish the book in two days and score 90+ in Jamb chemistry. There are such simplified books for every subject.
If you have sound background in English, nothing should stop you from passing Jamb use of English.
Comprehension may want to take your time, but I have dealt with how to answer jamb comprehension passages in 10 minutes. Click here to read my famous article on Jamb reading comprehension.

(4) Read And Revise

This point is very easy. Read and go over it after sometime.
As the name implies, ensure to put down very important points as you study. Then try to revise all the points when it is two days to the exam.
This is to ensure that you don’t struggle to remember in the exam hall. The rhema just flows without stress.
It is possible that you may not really understand some ideas passed in the topic. Revision gives you better understanding.
Revision is very effective and powerful. Do not fail to revise.

(5) Use Past Questions

Welcome on board. The fastest way to prepare and score very high in Jamb is the use of Jamb past questions.
Get the past questions for your four Jamb subjects and study along with them.
Start solving past questions from the year 2005. Make sure you solve and understand everything.
You should be able to solve and understand 8 years past questions within a week and two days.
Consult Google or your textbook for any question that is not clear. This is funny,  but you will have to cram what refuses to enter.
Generally, you don’t have to cram past questions. Try as much as possible to get the full picture.
As simple as this may be, it is capable of making you score 350+. Follow these guide and you will surely come back to testify. Mark my words.
Note: You don’t only study Jamb past questions because it would be repeated word-for-word. You study past questions so as to operate at the same frequency with Jamb. That’s to say, it makes you attain Jamb standard and no question surprises you in the hall.

Answer Exam Questions Faster With These 5 Tricks

1. See The Light:

To answer exam questions with the speed of light, you need to first see the light.
Light in this context speaks of reading and understanding the nature of questions you will likely encounter in the exam.
You will never answer questions very fast under the topics you are not good at.
Make sure you cover all the topics recommended in the exam syllabus. Go through it over and over again.
Solve as many questions as possible. Any topic you read, ensure to answer at least 20 questions. That should be your minimum.
The average number of questions you should attempt under every topic should be a hundred (100).
Don’t just answer them, make sure you really understand them.
Solve problems to the extent that you will tell yourself, “there is no question I cannot answer under this topic as far as this exam is concerned”.
With this, you have seen the light (prepared for the examination).

2. Practice With The Speed Of Light:

Yes! the second step to answer exam questions with the speed of light is to practice and answer likely exam questions with the speed of light. I will make this very simple.
Do you still remember the saying that charity begins at home? They never said that charity begins in the house. They made the home factor very clear.
When you are able to achieve the speed of sound at home, then it becomes very easy to achieve the speed of light in the exam hall.
As you practice questions, time yourself in minutes. As time goes on, begin to solve questions in seconds and milli-seconds.
The truth is that nothing is impossible. This is how I prepare for major exams.
I have been in an exam situation where I didn’t solve 40% of the questions before picking the right answers.
The more you solve with pen, your brain gets matured enough to process and manufacture answers even before you write anything down.

3. Revise Everything Before The Exam:

One of the factors that can slow you down in the exam hall is forgetting what you have read.
The more you forget things in the hall, the more your speed drops. In some cases, your speed can drop for that of sound to the speed of snail.
To overcome this factor, you need to revise everything. This is what I called reverse flash in my article on the secrets of successful students.
Never be too busy to revise all over again. Remember, if you are not humble enough, you will stumble. Keep calm and go through it all over.

4. Read The Exam Questions With Full Confidence:

Your confidence determines your competence. The more confidence you command, the greater the response from the you-in-you.
The you-in-you is the real you. It is the giant in you that takes only possibility for an answer.
Do not read the questions with fear. Attempt the questions the way you normally solve questions at home.
Do not be too conscious of time when answering exam questions. This is to ensure that you don’t make mistakes. All you need is to remain in the speed of light.
When you combine the mass of the exam questions with your speed of light, your momentum builds up. This momentum will be in the direction of success and high score.
The exam questions are afraid of you. So, you don’t have any valid reason to be afraid.

5. Start From Know To Unknown:

Yes! start from the simpler questions.
There are questions that cannot be solved easily and as well those that do not need to be solved.
Solve the questions that will take you milli-seconds first, then the ones that will take you seconds before attempting the questions that consumes minutes.

History of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Education, Career and Ethics in Nigeria

Just as it is in other parts of the world, the history of pharmacy in Nigeria is old, though largely unrecorded. Medical knowledge was largely kept by traditional healers. Information on healing including the materials and the methodologies were passed down verbally from generations and sometimes lost due to death. It is only perhaps from the last half of the 19th century, with the introduction of Western education that some wise elders started dictating such knowledge to their younger ones for posterity.
Before the advent of the early European missionaries, the major source of healing the sick was through the traditional healers, who used clay, plants and animal parts, or supernatural means (or combinations thereof) to bring about healing to their patients.

Early Years of European Pharmacy Practice

This era covers the period from the late 19th century to the first few decades of the 20th century. Pharmacy education during this period started with training of Nigerians in dispensing through apprenticeship under physicians, to prepare simple solutions and mixtures and subsequently either serving as dispensers in the hospitals or opening medicine shops to serve Nigerian community. An example of such early shops was that of Mr Richard Zaccheus Bailey, which was opened in 1887 along Balogun Street in Lagos.
Later on experienced dispensers and reputed pharmaceutical companies were allowed to train others. Again, Mr Bailey was an example of such early trainer of dispensers. With time, apprenticeship training in hospitals under physicians became more formal and regular. By the beginning of the 3rd decade of the 20th century (i.e the 1920’s), it became clear that the apprenticeship programme could no longer meet the need for pharmacy services in Nigeria, and preparations were made through legislation to open school of pharmacy for training of dispensers. This plan materialized through the establishment of a School of Pharmacy at Yaba, Lagos for the purpose in 1925.

Hospital Pharmacy Practice
A clear majority of the “pharmacists” in the early part of this era were actually “dispensers”. The hospitals or dispensaries were managed under the supervision of the medical officers in charge of such hospitals or dispensaries. There were only four hospitals in Nigeria as at 1900. These hospitals were located in Lagos, Asaba, Abeokuta and Calabar, three of which were government hospitals and one, a mission (Catholic) hospital. These hospitals used a common hospital formulary. There were also a number of mission medical set-ups before this date in some coastal towns, which could not be described as hospitals. However, there was a steady growth in the number of hospitals both government and mission between 1900 -1960.

Community Pharmacy Practice

In community practice, the first medicine shop was opened in 1887 by Mr Richard Zaccheus Bailey in present-day Balogun Street of Lagos State. It was primarily to cater for his European clients and a few African elites. Other retail pharmacies did not come into existence until the 1920’s and much later. The West African Drug Company Ltd was established in 1924, while commercial Medicine stores (by Chief S. T. Hunponu-Wusu and Mr Robert Olatunji Adebowale) and Phillips Medicine Stores (by Thomas King Ekundayo Phillips) were established in the 1940’s all in Lagos. Several years went by before retail pharmacies were opened in the towns of the old Western, Eastern and Northern regions of Nigeria. By the end of 1960, as many as 150 community pharmacy shops had been established while a total number of registered pharmacists (many of who were not in community or general pharmacy practice) was 542.

Industrial Pharmacy Practice

Industrial pharmacy was evident with the arrival of May and Baker in 1944, Glaxo and Pfizer in 1954. These pharmaceutical companies were mainly into importation and marketing of pharmaceuticals. Large-scale drug production began in the 60s involving government agencies, multinational companies and private entrepreneurs. Presently, there are more than 115 registered pharmaceutical manufacturers in Nigeria. These companies manufacture various pharmaceutical dosage forms cutting across various therapeutic classes. In addition to providing dependable high-quality pharmaceutical products to medical professionals and patients in various communities in Nigeria and West Africa, they have also contributed greatly to the economic growth of the nation.

The 12 Best Food Sources of Sulfur:

Sulfur is a mineral that is present in every cell of the body.  It plays a key role in liver metabolism and the function of the joint cartilage and keratin of the skin & hair. It is also critical for metabolism and anti-oxidant defense systems that protect the aging patterns of the brain.  Some of the healthiest cultures in the world have the highest levels of sulfur in their diet while the US has some of the lowest levels (1).

Icelanders are known for their low rates of depression, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (1).  Researchers are attributing much of this to the line of volcanoes that formed the island nation.  These volcanoes are full of sulfur ash which blankets the soil after an eruption. This enriches the ground and makes drinking water, produce, and meat products contain a dense supply of this key compound.

Sulfur: Critical for Optimal Health:

Over the last 2 decades, the US farming industry has shifted into a highly technologized mega farms.  These farms are entirely focused on producing high yield per acre and thus they have depleted many vital nutrients such as sulfur from the ground. These farmers also apply artificial fertilizers to the soil.  These fertilizers are enriched in phosphates and very low in sulfur.  These excess phosphates interfere with the absorption of this and many other key compounds.
Sulfur amino acids are extremely important for the maintenance and integrity of the cellular systems. They strongly influence the ability to manufacture glutathione and the capacity to neutralize free radicals, reactive oxygen species and detoxify poisonous compounds.  Could your diet be deficient in these critical amino acids?
BenefitsofGlutathione

Sulfur Boosts Anti-Oxidants:

There are 2 sulfur containing amino acids; cysteine and methionine.  They are not stored in the body.  Any dietary surplus is oxidized to sulfate and excreted in the urine or is stored as glutathione (GSH). Glutathione is one of the bodies most important anti-oxidants.  Lowered GSH levels are associated with degenerative disease, lowered immunity, & toxic build-up (2, 3, 4).  Cysteine levels appear to be the rate limiting factor for the synthesis of GSH (5).
The internal triage system of the body typically spares the brain since it is the most critical organ. However, in cases of low sulfur containing amino acids the brain will deplete its stores of GSH in order to maintain cysteine levels.  This reduces the brain’s antioxidant defenses and accelerates the degenerative processes.

Sulfur Helps Repair the Joints:

Sulfur plays a very important role in joint, cartilage, skin & blood vessel formation through the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) compounds.  Some of the familiar GAG compounds include glucosamine, heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate.  When sulfur levels are depleted the body is unable to replace the old and inferior GAG molecules in the joints.  With inadequate repair materials the joints, blood vessels, & skin cells suffer and degenerate faster.
Sulfation is a critical detoxification pathway in the liver. This is particularly necessary to detoxify pharmaceutical drugs such as acetaminophen.  The sulfation process of detoxification depletes the body of sulfur containing amino acids (6).  This is why individuals taking pharmaceutical medications need even more dietary sulfur.

Best Food Sources of Sulfur:

The best plant foods for this key compound are found in the Allium family which is high in allyl sulfides and sulfoxides. These include onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, & chives.  The cruciferous vegetable family has sulfur containing isothiocyanates that are potent cancer fighters. These foods include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, radishes, watercress, kale, & collard greens.
Animal foods rich in sulfur containing amino acids include organic eggs, wild-caught fish, & grass-fed beef. Raw dairy from grass-fed cows (particularly sulfur rich grass) is a great source of these key amino acids.  Bone Broth protein is also a rich source of a wide array of important amino acids as well.
SulfurRichFoods

Sulfur Rich Meal Plan:

These are some ideas to help you get a lot of sulfur rich nutrients into your system each day.
Breakfast:     Option 1:  Protein shake with almond milk, berries and bone broth protein – you could also put an avocado in this to make it thicker and creamier and add more sulfur compounds.    Option 2:  Veggie omelet with 3 eggs and 2 oz of grass-fed cheese and onions, tomatoes and kale inside
Lunch:  Green juice with bok choy as the water rich vegetable and turnip or mustard greens as the chlorophyll rich greens.  Have this with an avocado salad with grass-fed cheese and/or organic chicken or if you want to eat lighter you could do guacamole and flax crackers
Dinner:  Steamed broccoli and cabbage (could also do brussel sprouts, cauliflower, asparagus, etc) with grass-fed butter smeared all over.  Grilled garlic lemon chicken cooked in coconut oil.  Top with herbs on both and you may want to include a small sweet potato with grass-fed butter and cinnamon on top.  Instead of the sweet potato, you could always do double veggies.

Derek Lowe is perhaps America’s best-known medicinal chemist. That may not sound like much, but in a quiet field where most people go through their entire careers without discovering a marketable drug, it’s tough to make a name for yourself.
In 2002, Lowe became the first industry insider to start a blog — and he’s been enthusiastically at it ever since, writing on his blog In the Pipeline between experiments at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston. STAT spoke with Lowe about Internet trolls, his love for chemical reactions, and his new book on the history of chemistry.

Do you make a living from the blog?

If I were trying to make a living off the blog, I’d be eating weeds out of the backyard.

Why did you start writing it 14 years ago?

Reading other people’s blogs, I realized the barrier to doing this was minimal, so I kind of jumped into it.

Has the blog helped you professionally?

The blog has forced me to keep up with the scientific literature, both in drug discovery and associated areas. That helped me scientifically, and of course, it’s given me a lot of visibility, which has been no harm, either.

But you can’t blog about your own research?

My current scientific interests are mostly proprietary. I’m doing a lot of really interesting work that, most frustratingly, I cannot say a word about.

Were you the typical chemistry kid blowing things up in the basement?

I did have some chemicals that were in a higher oxidation state than an 8- or 9-year-old should have, yes.

What appeals to you about chemistry?

I like being the first to find this stuff out. When I make a compound no one else has ever made, even these days, I think, “There it is, never in the universe before, until I did it with my hands.” It’s ego partly, and it’s just sheer curiosity.

But it requires tremendous patience, no?

I’ve been doing this for 27 years, and I have never once put a drug into a pharmacy. I tell people: “If you want to know why your prescriptions cost so much, it’s me.” I’ve done nothing but spend money the entire time.

In addition to writing about chemistry, you’ve included recipes on your blog for pecan pie, lime sorbet, cornbread, and other foods. Do you see a lot of overlap between cooking and chemistry?

Never trust an organic chemist who can’t cook.

Your blog is now on Science Translational Medicine’s website. Has your audience shifted?

It’s the same motley crowd as ever. It gives me more visibility, so the motley crowd grows larger.

Do you get a lot of trolls?

The comments section has always been a point of pride to me, even though I had nothing to do with it. The people who show up and comment a lot are very knowledgeable. They don’t go around making comments about each others’ mothers.

Do you ever get tired of writing about failure in drug development?

I’ve seen people who couldn’t stand their ideas not working. If you can’t stand your ideas not working, you shouldn’t be in science.

Are you leaving a legacy for science?

I’m leaving a huge pile of stuff on the Internet for free. Now I have a book out and I wouldn’t mind writing another one. I would love to leave a scientific legacy. I’ll try the best I can, but the universe has a big say in this, too.
